Darwin Day 34

Heard from Boof last night and they were at Winton (where it was cool), heading to Carnarvon Gorge today.

Off having a further look around Darwin (it really is a small place) and found an outdoor theatre similar in concept toΒ  Sun Pictures in Broome.

Went down to Fisherman’s Wharf.

Went back in to town and met the owner of this bike and had a chat for a while. He has ridden up the coast from Sydney and was looking for a backpacker’s for the night.

Found a barber and motorcycle only parking. Gotta love a good haircut and a special place to park πŸ˜‰ Maintaining the Nige ‘No Smile Policy’ even on tour.

Took my snazzy haircut for a ride out Berrimah and to the Hidden Valley Racetrack.

Darwin Day 33

Went back out to the Honda dealer who had a quick look at the ‘Bird and bodged a few loose things up for me, couldn’t source a new back tyre so will have to wait until I hit Alice Springs.

Went out to Howard Springs (early water supply for Darwin) for a look, springs seem to be a big thing in this part of the world. This WAS a well developed swimming area for years but….

This one had a ‘Special’ message.

Headed back into town and down to the beach area.

Katherine to Darwin Day 32

Took ages to pack up this morning. It was the first time that I had to get EVERYTHING on the ‘Bird, even my little suppository stool πŸ™‚ and of course it was hot.

Unbelievably, I ran into the Kiwis at Pine Creek (who decided that we were miscreants) who were on their way back to Darwin to return their hire 4WD. They sought me out to get the address ofΒ  NIGE πŸ™‚

Steady ride up to Darwin, even took a scenic route where I rediscovered that some roads even have bends in them.
sign1

Came across a burnt out semi so got the ‘Bird to pose.

burnt1

There was even a sign warning me about the dangers.

Early impression of Darwin is ‘Where is it?’ and why does everyone speak with an Irish accent?

room1

The digs for the next couple of days, better than the tent.

Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) Day 31

Filthy hot again but had to get up early anyway to catch bus for the ride up to Katherine Gorge. Said our farewells briefly (bit sad) because when I come back they will be gone.

Did a tour of the first three gorges but to honest, I was a bit underwhelmed. Guess it takes a lot to ‘whelm’ me πŸ™‚

Gorge1

Chatted to a nice Irish backpacker on the ride back into town who had just been given work out at the Park. She had a VERY broad accent I ‘tink. The world over here seems to full of the Irish.

Got back to camp and as expected, the chainsaw twins had left and also the guy who had been next door. All my gear was still intact and that was a very good thing but it all looked very forlorn πŸ™

Gorge2

Spent the rest of the day trying to fill in time, what did we do when we were a group? Got bored enough that I even went in to town and washed the ‘Bird.

Gorge3

Off to Darwin tomorrow but there has been talk here of rain up north……

Katherine Day 30

Filthy hot night so woke up covered in sweat, Brian was already down at the spring and Ivan soon followed. We frolicked πŸ™‚ for a while and then came back to camp for a bacon and egg breakfast. Got organised and headed off to Edith Falls that is up from Katherine Gorge and swam and frolicked some more πŸ™‚
Came back to camp and went back to the springs and frolicked some more πŸ™‚ Did I mention it was hot?

Briz and I went fishing for Barramundi but I lost my lure on the second cast and Briz nearly caught half the river population, there was a croc trap on the other side of the river πŸ™

Went to the Golf Club for dinner and was served the most enormous rump steaks we have ever seen, neither of which were finished.

Briz and Ivan are leaving tomorrow and I am hanging around here for one more day to do Katherine Gorge and then heading up to Darwin.

At least now we will have different things to write about. It is a bit sad as it has been a great time tagging along with the Chainsaw Twins and it will be hard to go back to being alone again.

Katherine Day 29

Woken up early by Big Nev packing up to leave so we also got away pretty early, it was still bloody hot. Crossed the border into Northern Territory. Rode to Timber Creek pretty hard, leaving the Chainsaw Twins behind.

WA

Arrived at Katherine where, surprisingly, it was hot.

Set up camp and went for a swim in an amazing spring.

Spring

Boof damaged his poor wittle fumb putting up the tent.

Wyndham Day 28

Went for a ride to Wyndham, the knowledgeable one tells me it is the most northern town in WA. All I know is it was an interesting place.

Stopped in at ‘The Grotto’, another great little natural phenomenom that required a fair effort to climb down to and up from.

Arrived back at Kurunurra and went down to the beach area to take a few photos. When I walked back to the ‘Bird, the local Mr Plod was waiting for me, apparently a concerned citizen had phoned ahead of my arrival and the police had an alert to look out for me and the ‘Bird. Upshot of it all was that I had been riding too fast and irresponsibly by removing my feet from the footpegs, lucky they didn’t see me on a good day πŸ™‚

Kununurra Day 27

Chainsaw Twins saves a flying fox certainly from death after it was caught on barbed wire and then I rode to Kunanurra, Briz had a blowout before Turkey Creek Roadhouse. Shit ‘appens.
